Skincare, we want it organic and cruelty-free

November 17, 2018

In our time of rapid scientific and technological progress, we carefully watch the quality of food and water. However, we often ignore the safety of skincare products that we use on a daily basis. The primary function of the skin is the barrier function; it protects our body from harmful effects of the environment.  Some aggressive elements can cause a negative effect even on the outermost layer of the skin so we need to make sure we use safe and non-toxic products.

The biggest badboy on the list: Parabens! They are a type of preservative used to prevent mould and bacteria from growing in beauty products. In other words, they prolong shelf life to months, even years! They enter the body through the skin where they mimmick oestrogen by disrupting the hormone function. Too much oestrogen can then trigger an increase in breast cell division and growth of tumours. That's the reason why parabens have been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues. Don't just look for 'contains parabens', they also go under the names butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben.

One of the most often used ingredients in skincare products is mineral oil. This synthetic element covers the skin like a wrap, affecting the natural immune barrier. As a result, skin cannot effectively breath and release toxins, which promotes various skin disorders such as clogged pores and dry skin.

Cyclomethicone and siloxanes are silicone-based substances that are widely used in skin moisturizers and hair care products. These chemicals can intoxicate your gastro intestinal system and liver and are polluting to the environment.

But also fragrances which are widely used in makeup and skin care products can be harmful. There are more than 4 000 ingredients that can be included as the compound of fragrances, and many of them are of animal origin. Fragrances can cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, or headaches.

Brands producing organic and vegan-friendly products proudly prove that no aggressive elements are necessary to moisture, lift or highlight our skin and produce an anti-aging effect.
